Ontario Government Announces End of Restricted Fire Zone and Travel Restrictions in Northwestern Ontario

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Following substantial rainfall and a decline in wildfire risks, emergency forestry restrictions in Northwestern Ontario have been lifted earlier today. The Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed that the regional restricted fire zone and the associated backcountry travel ban were officially rescinded at 12:01 a.m. This decision marks the conclusion of weeks during which outdoor burning was heavily restricted throughout the Northwest Region to prevent wildland fires.

Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted
Highway maintenance crews clear public roadways to restore regional transit and emergency access.

Authorities responsible for fire management announced that valid burning permits are now reissued, allowing outdoor fires such as campfires, recreational burning, and fireworks displays in accordance with usual safety standards. Officials in Thunder Bay also indicated that local fire bans would cease at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, but residents are reminded that municipal permits are still required for open-air fires. The authorities attributed the relaxation of restrictions to cooler weather conditions and consistent rainfall that have notably decreased active fuel sources.

Restrictions on Fire Zones and Travel to End Throughout Northwestern Ontario

Alongside the lifting of burning restrictions, emergency management officials also removed localized access restrictions in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation areas. Transportation agencies confirmed that key regional routes, including Highway 527 and Highway 811, have been fully reopened to civilian traffic. This reopening permits residents displaced by the fires to return home and restores routine transportation and recreational activities on primary roadways.

Ontario Forest Fires tracking systems showed that orders related to major fire complexes, such as Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were revoked at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Evacuation alerts affecting the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border were also lifted following safety assessments that confirmed successful containment of perimeter threats through active suppression efforts.

Regional Restricted Fire Zone Restrictions End as of Thursday Morning

Although regional bans have been rescinded, fire officials stressed that wildfire suppression teams continue to operate on remaining remote fires. Emergency personnel warned that despite the reduced safety risks, the public should remain cautious when starting fires on dry ground. Environmental monitoring agencies will keep tracking humidity levels and lightning activity to adjust regional fire hazard ratings throughout the summer fire season.

Leaders in northern communities welcomed the rescinding of emergency orders, recognizing that the renewed access helps support local tourism and outfitting businesses. The provincial government expressed appreciation to residents and visitors for complying with emergency restrictions during the period of greatest danger. As the measures lifting the restricted fire zone and travel ban are fully implemented, authorities emphasize that outdoor recreation enthusiasts must continue following provincial fire safety regulations.
